From Burnout to Becoming: The Renewal Method for Healthcare Professionals
Burnout in healthcare is real and it’s rising across nurses, physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and healthcare leaders.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, or disconnected from your work… you are not alone. And more importantly… you are not the problem.
Before We Talk About Healing, Let’s Talk About Why You’re Burned Out
If you’ve been feeling like you’re just getting through the day… or questioning how you got here… I want you to hear this:
You are not the problem.
You are a human being responding to a system that has asked too much of you for too long.
Healthcare has changed. The pace, the demands, the expectations… it’s a lot. And over time, that constant pressure starts to wear on even the most dedicated, compassionate people.
This isn’t about caring less.
It’s about being in environments that make it really hard to sustain your well-being.
The 6 Drivers of Burnout in Healthcare Workers
Burnout doesn’t just happen randomly. There are patterns I see over and over again:
Workload and Staffing Shortages
Too many patients, not enough support, and increasing administrative work…it adds up fast.
Lack of Control Over Your Workday
Schedules are packed, interruptions are constant, and there’s very little room to breathe.
Lack of Recognition
You’re giving a lot (at home, work, relationships) but it doesn’t always feel seen or acknowledged.
Lack of Team Connection and Support
Even when you’re surrounded by people, it can still feel isolating.
Moral Distress and Values Misalignment
You’re asked to do things that don’t always sit right with you …and that tension builds.
Lack of Fairness in the Workplace
Inconsistency, unclear expectations, and inequities can wear you down over time.
Symptoms of Burnout in Healthcare Professionals
Over time, this shows up in ways that are hard to ignore:
Emotional exhaustion
Feeling detached or cynical
A sense that what you’re doing isn’t making the impact it used to
Why Burnout Is Not Just About the System
The system plays a big role… but there’s another piece that often gets missed:
Your internal response to stress.
Not because you’re doing anything wrong
but because no one ever taught you how to manage it.
Even on a well-planned day, one moment can shift everything.
Understanding the Mind–Body Response to Stress
You know those moments…
Something happens
and suddenly your energy drops, your thoughts start racing, and your body feels tense.
That’s your nervous system doing its job.
But when it happens over and over again without a reset, it leads to overwhelm, distraction, and eventually burnout.
The Mind Muscle Reset: A Simple Tool for Burnout Recovery
Pause.
Give yourself a moment before reacting.
my personal favorite hack…find a bathroom or quiet hall/office/space - set your timer 5 min… sit if you can, close your eyes, take 3 slow deep breaths, notice your breathing ….find curiosity in it and say a practiced intentional resent message to yourself …mine is….
”okay, you got this you are……..(annoyed right now, frustrated, etc.) it all makes sense….just take the time you need girl …find love for you and them”…3 more slow deep breaths, then I think about my favorite person, thing, space, memory and generate some positive emotions on purpose…
get a drink of water and walk for a few rounds outside or down a long hallway or up and down a few sets of stairs …flushing out the negative emotion.
Notice
Observe what shifted with your reset
Name the Thought(s) that brought you to the moment of tension
Take a minute to jot it down on paper, plan to come back to it later
The 4 Pillars of Holistic Wellness for Burnout Recovery
Physical Well-Being
Sleep, hydration, movement…basic, but powerful.
Mental Well-Being
Creating space, simplifying, and becoming aware of your thoughts.
Emotional Well-Being
Letting yourself feel, setting boundaries, and not carrying everything.
Spiritual Well-Being
Reconnecting to what matters to you…your values, your purpose.
The Renewal Method is about small, doable changes…not overhauling your life.
Pick one to three supportive actions each day.
That’s it.
Over time, those small shifts help regulate your nervous system, rebuild your energy, and bring back a sense of clarity.
Burnout Recovery Starts Here
If you’re constantly “on,” overwhelmed, or just getting through the day… it doesn’t have to stay that way.
Imagine catching stress before it builds.
Imagine pausing instead of reacting.
Imagine feeling a little more clear, a little more grounded…yes, even on hard days.
That’s the shift.
It’s not about removing stress completely.
It’s about changing how you experience it.
You Don’t Have to Do This Alone
A lot of healthcare professionals hesitate to reach out.
There’s still stigma.
There are real concerns about how it might be perceived.
So instead, many people just keep pushing through.
But pushing through is often what leads to deeper burnout.
Coaching gives you a space to slow down, talk things through, and understand what’s really going on…without judgment (this is not executive coaching that adds more pressure to align with the system that benefits from you working smarter and harder).
It’s not about fixing you.
It’s about helping you come back to yourself.
You don’t have to wait until it gets worse.
Start by noticing.
Start by pausing.
And when you’re ready… reach out.
