The Assessment You're Probably Skipping
We Would Never Treat a Patient Without an Assessment
As healthcare professionals, assessment is second nature.
Every day we ask questions.
We gather data.
We identify patterns.
We consider risk factors.
We determine a diagnosis.
Only then do we develop a treatment plan.
We would never prescribe medication, recommend surgery, or reassure a patient that "everything is probably fine" without first understanding what we're treating.
So why do so many of us skip that same process when it comes to ourselves?
When we feel exhausted...
Disconnected...
Overwhelmed...
We often self-diagnose.
"I just need a vacation."
"It's been a busy season."
"Once this project is over, I'll feel better."
"I just need to push through."
But what if you're treating the wrong problem because you've never completed the assessment.
Burnout Doesn't Happen Overnight
Burnout rarely arrives all at once.
Like many chronic conditions, it develops gradually.
Think about Type 2 diabetes.
Long before serious complications develop, patients often experience subtle symptoms. Increased fatigue. More thirst. Changes in energy. Small warnings that something isn't quite right.
As clinicians, we don't ignore those symptoms.
We assess them.
We educate.
We intervene early because we know prevention is always easier than treatment.
Burnout deserves the same approach.
Its earliest warning signs are often subtle:
Fatigue that doesn't improve with rest
Difficulty concentrating
Feeling emotionally detached
Increased irritability
Brain fog
Trouble sleeping
Loss of motivation
Feeling like you're simply surviving each shift
These aren't character flaws.
They're assessment findings.
They're information.
The People Most Likely to Burn Out Are Often the Ones Everyone Depends On
One of the biggest myths about burnout is that it happens to people who aren't resilient enough.
In my experience, the opposite is often true.
The healthcare professionals who struggle most are often:
The overachievers.
The people pleasers.
The dependable team members everyone calls first.
The compassionate caregivers who naturally put others before themselves.
The perfectionists who hold themselves to impossible standards.
The leaders who quietly carry the emotional weight of their teams.
The parents who finish one shift at work only to begin another caring for everyone at home.
These aren't weaknesses.
They're strengths.
They're often the very qualities that make someone an exceptional clinician.
But without awareness, those same strengths can quietly become the fuel that keeps burnout alive.
Burnout Is More Than a Workload Problem
One of the biggest misconceptions about burnout is that it's simply caused by working too many hours.
The workload matters.
Staffing matters.
Leadership matters.
The healthcare system absolutely plays a role.
But after more than 30 years in healthcare and now coaching healthcare professionals ... have learned something equally important. You’ve probably heard the typical recommendations:
Burnout isn't a character flaw, and it isn't simply a workload problem. It's often the result of good people living from unexamined thinking patterns while trying to meet impossible demands.
Thoughts like:
"I should be able to handle this."
"I don't want to let anyone down."
"My patients need me."
"I'll rest later."
"I can keep going."
"My boss doesn't get it"
"My coworkers are not doing enough, therefore I have to"
These thoughts often come from a place of compassion and dedication.
But over time, they create chronic stress, guilt, resentment, emotional exhaustion, and eventually burnout.
The goal isn't to care less.
The goal is to care for yourself with the same compassion you give everyone else.
Other People Often Notice Before You Do
One of the first signs of progressing burnout is that other people begin noticing changes before we do.
Your spouse says,
"You don't seem like yourself."
A coworker asks,
"Are you okay?"
A friend notices you've become withdrawn.
Many healthcare professionals dismiss these comments.
Until they hear them repeatedly.
But there's another group of people who often notice, too.
Your patients.
Not because you've stopped providing excellent care.
Not because you're less knowledgeable.
But because we're all human.
Human beings are remarkably good at sensing when someone is fully present and when someone is emotionally depleted.
Patients may not remember every word you say.
But they almost always remember how they felt in your presence.
Burnout can quietly interfere with the connection you've worked so hard to build.
Not because you've stopped caring.
But because you're trying to pour from an empty cup.
Why I Created and Assessment to Help Those Who Care for Others
Throughout my career as a nurse, leader, and now certified life coach, I started seeing the same patterns everywhere.
In physicians.
Nurses.
Therapists.
Healthcare leaders.
Friends.
Clients.
And if I'm honest...
In myself.
It broke my heart to watch incredibly compassionate healthcare professionals continue suffering simply because they didn't recognize the warning signs until burnout had taken hold.
The consequences extend far beyond one person.
More turnover.
More staffing shortages.
More talented clinicians leaving careers they once loved.
More emotional suffering carried home to families.
If nearly half of healthcare professionals are experiencing burnout today, the reality is many others will face it at some point during their careers.
That isn't just a healthcare problem.
It's a human problem.
Because one day, every one of us..or someone we love will need a healthcare professional.
And when I think about the clinician I hope is caring for my family...
I don't want someone who's merely surviving.
I want someone who's thriving. And I am sure you want the same for your loved ones, peers and staff.
Physically healthy.
Emotionally resilient.
Mentally clear.
Spiritually grounded.
Someone who knows their value isn't measured by how much they sacrifice.
That vision is why I created the Healthcare Burnout Assessment.
Not to label you.
Not to convince you to leave healthcare.
Not to tell you you're burned out.
But to help you understand where you are today.
Because just like medicine...
The right treatment begins with the right assessment.
Discover Your Burnout Stage
The quiz takes only a few minutes to complete.
You'll discover whether you're experiencing:
Early warning signs
Moderate burnout
Advanced burnout
More importantly, you'll receive practical strategies designed specifically for your current stage.
Because someone experiencing early warning signs doesn't need the same recovery plan as someone experiencing advanced burnout.
Assessment comes before intervention.
Always.
You Are Not Meant to Live in Survival Mode
If you’ve been operating in a constant state of stress, it can start to feel normal. But it’s not your baseline, it’s your body adapting. And the beautiful thing is… it can learn a new way.
A calmer way.
A steadier way.
A more supported way.
